Adobe IBM iX Creative Jam 2019 First Place Winner

Loop is an app that brings environmental activism right into your hands. This project was created in a 48-hour hackathon-style sprint by myself and my teammates—Sam Rogers, Sasha Menshikova, Cody Cappella, and Tyler Rathod—for Adobe’s IBM iX Creative Jam. My contributions to the project included ideation, developing use cases and user flows, data visualization, and designing user interfaces.

The Problem

Climate change is the topic on everyone’s mind right now. There’s no doubt (at least in popular scientific belief) that our behaviors and lifestyle choices have impacted the world we live in negative ways. We are constantly bombarded with research reports and think pieces telling us hundreds of different ways we need to immediately change our behavior to help save the planet. Unfortunately, this constant barrage of demands leaves us feeling overwhelmed. In turn, a kind of paralysis sets in—we want to help but there are so many options and we don’t know where to begin, so we do nothing.

Loop solves this problem by presenting these tasks in a way that is manageable, personalized, and rewarding.

Small Steps for Big Results

By delivering a customizable set of tasks each week and allowing users to level up, users will feel confident and motivated to do their part in reducing their ecological footprint. The inclusion of location-based tasks, such as beach clean-ups or climate rallies, in the user's area, as well as global challenges, serve to connect them with their communities and strengthen their ties with the environmental movement around them. Long term goals include helping users to develop and maintain environmentally friendly habits.

Tracking Progress and Connecting Communities

Each week and month, users are given a certain number of completed steps to aim for and awards are given when milestones are reached. Allowing users to view their progress over time and rewarding them for their actions leads to feelings of accomplishment upon completing tasks which then motivates them to use Loop every day. Loop also incorporates community events and tasks, such as local beach clean-ups or climate rallies, as well as global challenges, to strengthen their ties with the environmental movement around them and allow them to see the real-world effects of their actions.
